Too much TV

According to the ratings company Nielsen, people in the USA watch an average of 5 hours of TV a day. What a loss of time...

Even though I'm with you, but any activity burns time as does writing books. You could actually do some sports instead, get more healthy and fit. Or socialize. So what exactly is the point that makes TV more "bad" than other activities? Do you have solid arguments other than possibly being moralistic? I find it extremely hard to provide really good and convincing arguments.

I'm proud to be one who helps hold the average down. I'm pretty sure I watch less than an hour of TV per day.

Dominikus, actually I find it's much easier to write books, do sports or socialize when I do not spend time watching TV :).

For examples, check out "Amusing ourselves to death: public discourse in the age of show business". Although I didn't read the book, I strongly suspect I agree with the arguments. It's really nice that somebody else wrote them for me.

Dominikus, watching TV is not inherently bad. However watching a lot of TV can steal time away from many other really good things and it does this in a way that makes you stop after a few hours and say something like "Wow, I can't believe I wasted my whole night watching TV, and I didn't really enjoy it very much either. Now it's time for bed."

Is that moralistic? Maybe just a little bit. ;-)
